Joseph was born in 1849 in Sheffield, Yorkshire. His parents were John Hargate and Sarah Cutts.[1] He was christened on 8 April 1849 at All Saints Church, Darfield, Yorkshire.[2]
When the 1851 census was taken Joseph lived with his parents and younger sister at Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield, Yorkshire. His father worked as a brewer. [3] Later that year his father was killed in an accident involving a brewers dray.
At the time of the 1861 census Joseph was living with his grandfather Joseph Hargate and his wife Margaret. [4] Some time before this census his mother had married Joseph Beaumont,[citation needed]
His grandfather Joseph Hargate passed away in 1867, and in his will he left Joseph the Beerhouse (Masons Arms) Broomhill, Yorkshire.
In 1871 Joseph was living with his aunt Mary (Hargate) Winder and uncle Thomas Winder at the Beer House, in Broomhill, which Joseph owned.[5] The following year on 29 April 1872, Joseph sold the Beerhouse to Mr. Thomas Winder (Beerhouse Keeper) and Mary, his wife.
In 1881 Joseph still lived in Broomhill with his aunt and uncle and their family. [6]
On 9 Sep 1887 Joseph married Sarah Ann Winder, daughter of Thomas Barlow at St Marys Church, Wombwell, Yorkshire.[7] Sarah Ann was the widow of Frederick Winder, Joseph's cousin.
Joseph and Sarah Ann had three children. In 1891, 1901 and 1911 they lived in Broomhill, Wombwell, Yorkshire with their children and Sarah Ann's children from her earlier marriage. Joseph worked as a coal miner. [8][9][10]
On 4 Sep 1917 their son Percy Hargate was killed in France in the First World War.[11][12]
Joseph passed away in 1919. [13] He was buried in Wombwell Cemetery on 9 February 1919. [14]
