Biography

Nancy Mary Hargis was born 9 Jan 1884[1] in Stewart County, Tennessee[2] to Desmond Hargis and Mary (Shelton) Hargis, known as Mollie[3][2].
She married Edison Fentress, 2 Oct 1904 in Bumpus Mills, Stewart County, Tennessee[4]. The couple had 7 children[5][6][7][8].
Nancy passed away on 2 Mar 1974, in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky[9][1][2]. She is buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky[10].

Research Notes

  • The 1900 census is mis-indexed.  1) The spelling of the first name of the head of the family is recorded as "Sigmond" but the image of the census page shows this was written "Dezmond". The spelling in the Hargis family genealogy is given as "Lionel Desmond Hargis"[11], known as Desmond or Dezzie.  2) The age of Desmond has been misinterpreted by the indexer. On the image of the census page one sees that the age is written as 43 and the birth month as Aug 1856. both of these are correct according to the the Hargis family genealogy[11] which says he was born 11 Aug 1856. But the indexer misread the 1856 as 1806 and changed the age accordingly to 94 which is wrong.
  • The 1920 census record[6] is mis-indexed in that it shows a son "Elnor" which the image of the census page shows was actually written "Elmer". Also of interest in the image of the census page is that the family of Jesse Ezell Sr. is listed immediately following Edison's family and in the same dwelling. This is consistent with the description in the family records[12] :  "1920, Jordonia, TN - moved into 11 room house with Ezells."
  • The 1930 census[7] has a few errors. The family name is indexed as "Fentren" but the image shows this to be "Fentress". The census taker listed two sons named Earl - the older one should be "Irl" and the younger one should be "Elmer". Edison's mother's birthplace is listed as Kentucky but this is NOT corroborated by any other sources.
