Biography

The early years

Desmond Franklin Hargis was born in October 1869 in Illinois^[1][2] to Lional Dennis Hargis and Mary Adeline McDaniel.

Family Life

His first wife was Anna Forrest Pugh^[3].  They married on the 14th of January 1890 in Steward County, Tennessee^[4]. Their children were :

Mollie May Hargis (1890-1983)^[3][2]

Sallie Cora Hargis (1898-1995)^[7][2][5][8]

Desmond F. later married Florence Lillie Stagner^[3] in 1929 in Tennessee^[9].

Through the years

In 1900 census^[2] shows the family living on a farm with a mortgage in Stewart Tennessee, where he is a farmer.  In the home are Desmond 30, Anna 24, Mollie 9, Bessie 6, Rossie 4, Salle 2 and Lydia 2 months.  Anna confirms she's had 5 children - all are surviving.

Anna passed away in 1905 leaving Desmond F. with several small children to raise.

In 1910 census^[5], the family are living in a rented house on Bumpus Mills Road in Stewart, Tennessee and he is working in the Flour Mill.  In the home are Desmond 41, Bessie 16, Rosie 15, Cora 12, Lita 10(Lydia), Eula 7, Franklin 4.

In the 1920 census^[6] we find he continues to be a widower, working as an operator at a light plant, living in a rented home on Hopkinsville Road in Lafayette, Christian, Kentucky. In the home are Desmond 50, Eula 17 and Franklin 14.  Rose has moved back home and is now showing as a widow under the last name of Herndon with 2 of her children; Robert 3 and Helen 1 year and 7 months.

Desmond F. would marry Florence in 1929^[9] and become stepfather to her children.

In the 1930 census^[10] the family is back in Bumpus Mills, Stewart County, Tennessee where Desmond is again farming on his own farm and has a radio.  In the home were Desmond 60, Florence 47 and her 3 children Graham Walker 14, Geneva Walker 12, Marvin Walker 9, as well as Florence's father James Stagner 85.

In the 1940 census^[11] Desmond is 70 and living with his daughter Eula and her family in rural Stewart County, Tennessee.

His final home would be in McEwen, Humphries County, Tennessee^[12], however his last few weeks would be spent in Kentucky.

Death

He passed away from pneumonia on November 10 1960 in rural Gracie, Trigg County, Kentucky^[12].  Burial was in the Green Hill Cemetery in Bumpus Mills, Stewart County, Tennessee.^[3].  His Grandson Robert Herndon would sign the death certificate.

1. The exact date of birth is unclear.  Family sources^[13] show that he was born on 28 Aug 1969, the 1870 and 1900 censuses^[1][2] show that he was born in Oct 1869 and the gravestone^[3] shows him born in 1869.
2. The middle initial "F." of Desmond is well documented.  That F stands for a middle name "Franklin" is unsourced.
