Biography

The early years

Hugh Fleppin Hargis was born in Macon County, Tennessee on the 12th of March, 1857[1] to Jackson Hargis[1] and Mary Uhles[1].

Family Life

He married Sarah Elizabeth Beal and they had:

  • Antom Odell Hargis(1882-?)[2][3]
  • Viola Hargis(1888-?)[4][3][5]
  • Hugh Britton Hargis(1894-1924)[4][3][5]
  • Unknown Hargis lived and died before 1900[3]

He applied for enrollment of Eastern Cherokee and was rejcted "Hugh F. Hargis, and 2 children, Rejected. Claims through the same source as #15926.[6]

Funeral services for Hugh Flippin Hargis, 69, hwo died at his home, 1225 Lischey avenue, Sunday evening at 11:10 o'clock, following a lengthy illness will be held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. W. Rufus Beckett officiating.

Mr. Hargis was a native of Macon county and had lived in Nashvlle for the past twenty-seven years. He had been an active member of the Baptist church since he was 23 years old, and was a member of Washington council No. 5. Jr. O.U,.A.M. Mr. Hargis was a contracting carpenter, but for a number of years had been an invalid due to a fall from a building. He is survived by his wife, MRs. Sarah Elizabeth Beal Hargis; daughter, Miss viola E. Hargis; son A.O., Hargis and eight brandchildren.,.

Deacons of the Eastland Baptist church will serve as honoary pallbearers. Member sof the Washington council No. 5, JR. O.U.A.M., will serve as active pallbearers and have charge of the service at the grave. Interment will be in spring Hill cemetery.
