A Naval Biographical Dictionary 1849 states that William was son of an elder brother of Admiral Sir William Hargood, of which there seem to have been four. Thomas died about 1779, Henry of whom little is known, Hezekiah, whose listed children do not include a William, and Benjamin. The dictionary says that the father was a legal gentleman. Benjamin was an attorney, but I can find nothing about his wife and children. Does this help? Annoyingly no one names William's father.
