Biography

Kent (historic flag)
Harold Hargrove was born in Kent, England.

Sidney Harold Hargrove was born on 1 April 1867 to James Sidney and Jessie Hargrove (nee Aird)[1] in Blackheath, Kent,[2] their eldest son.

The family lived variously in Wandsworth, Surrey,[3] as well as at Lancaster Gate in Paddington, London, where Harold continued to live with his family after becoming a solicitor.[4]

Educated at Harrow and at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was admitted as a solicitor on 4 December 1890 after receving both MA and LLM degrees while at Cambridge. He joined his father at his law firm, Hargrove & Co., and was also a member of the Law Society.[5]

Evidently Harold was in regular contact with cousins on the maternal side of his family, as his cousin George Herbert Gill named him as the primary beneficiary of his will, which was proved on 21 June 1899 in London after George's death on 25 March.[6] This is particularly evident in the fact that there is no record of George ever visiting England; he was born in Germany and died in Nigeria.

In 1900,[7] Sidney was married to Hilda Beatrice Cooper[8] in London, and they went on to have three children: Frank Harold, Dennis Clive, and Stanley Arthur.[9]

Sidney was also named as beneficiary in the wills of three of his siblings who predeceased him: Herbert in 1905[10]; Hilda in 1929[11]; and Norah in 1942[12]

Sidney was philanthropic and conducted work as honorary solicitor for various institutions, including the Industrial Welfare Society and the Yarrow Home and Hospital for Children. He also became Vice-President of the Board of Management for the Royal National Hospital for Diseases of the Chest in Ventnor in 1922.[5]

Sidney died in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, on 10 August 1944 at the age of 77.[13] He was eulogized in a March 1945 edition of the Journal of the Institution of Civil Engineers, owing to his experience acting as solicitor for the Instution while working for his father's law firm.[5]
