Twin Sisters Will Be Doubly Thankful Thursday
By Beth Macklin of the World Staff
Bibxby sisters Truce Hargrove and Ruth Wakefield will observe their 80th birthdays Thursday, and it is the first time in their lives the twins can recall their birthday falling on Thanksgiving Day.
So the pair, who live in a brownstone house across from Bixby's First Baptist Church, plan to make a gala occasion of it.
They'll have 16-18 for Thanksgiving dinner, then an open house for family and friends from 3-5 p.m.
Their dining room is large enough to seat that number, too. It wasn't long ago the twins had a quilt in a frame set up in the room.
"I do all our sewing," said Mrs. Wakefield, who can thread a needle without her spectacles.
Miss Hargrove, who was a licensed practical nurse during her career, stands ready to apply her knowledge should the sisters need it, "but, fortunately, neither of us is ever ill."
Trucie Kay and Ruthie May Hargrove were born Nov. 23, 1898, on a farm between Mulberry and Ozark, Ark.
They were the last of seven children. Their mother died when they were less than 3, "and one of our regrets is that we can't even remember what she looked like. The family had no pictures of her."
Their oldest sister was 19 when their mother died, and she joined their father in caring for the family, aided within a few years by another sister who was 11 at Mrs. Hargrove's death.
"They dressed us alike when we were small, but we never were identical twins." Miss Hargrove's eyes are gray and Mrs. Wakefield's blue.
"I liked pink and she liked blue," explained Miss Hargrove, "and she was enough bigger than I that, by the time we were 12, she could wear older girls' styles, while I still had to wear little girls'. So from that age, we never tried to dress alike."
The women still retain more than a little hint of the red hair that was another family trait.
Being twins was no novelty when they started to school. "We attended Long Branch school-in the country where the 60-65 students had classes in one room. At one time, there were six sets of twins in the schoolroom."
That may have been hard on their teacher, but the twins remember their school years as a time of fun. "What one of us couldn't think of to do, the other did," Mrs. Wakefield recalled.
"We weren't divided by grades, and we had a lot of fun at spelling bees, with the various ages competing. It may have been simple, but most of us got a pretty good education in that one room schoolhouse, where we also went to church on Sundays."
The sisters now attended First Methodist Church-about half a block from their house-and members of that congregation and their quilting circle are among those expected to attend the open house.
Ruth Hargrove married William J. Wakefield, from a nearby farm, Dec. 3, 1922, and the two lived on a farm until they moved to Bixby in 1954. They moved into the brownstone home a year later. Wakefield died in 1959.
Miss Hargrove worked as a nurse in Kansas City much of her life, moving in the early 60s to Tulsa. She worked at Hillcrest Medical Center until her retirement, about 1965. Then she joined Mrs. Wakefield and the sisters have lived together since.
With the church so near, they see no need for a car. Mrs. Wakefield's daughter, Mrs. Herman Steele, takes them shopping every two weeks "to get the heavy things." But the twins also have shopping carts, and they take them to town to bring home their everyday purchases.
The carts have been well-loaded as they prepared for the Thanksgiving-birthday dinner. In addition to the Steeles, guests will include Mrs. Wakefield's other daughter, Mrs. Joe Gillespie of Fort Smith, Ark.; her son James Wakefield, who lives on acreage on South Peoria not far from Bixby, and their families, including seven grandchildren.
"It'll be a happy day," the twins predicted. "We've sure got a lot to be thankful for."
