Biography

Aaron was born in 1780 in Sampson County, North Carolina. He was a prominent planter there.

When Aaron was about 17 he married Jane (Peggy) Carr in 1797 in Sampson County, N.C. The couple had one child: Carr Hargrove.

In the 1800 census Aaron (age about 20) was living in Fayetteville, Sampson, North Carolina.[1]

Aaron died at the age of about 54 in November 1834 in Sampson, North Carolina, United States.[2] His estate had probate in 1835 in Sampson County.[3]

Slaves

Aaron Hargrove gifted an enslaved girl Chaney (later Chaney Monk), aged 9, to his daughter Harriet Monk in 1827.

At the time of his death, the enslaved people owned by Hargrove were divided into six lots and transferred to his heirs:[3]

  1. A boy Jim and a girl Ann were given to Ben Hargrove. Together they were valued at $475.
  2. Girls Lucy and Jinny were given to William Darden "in rite of" his wife Margarett. They were valued at $400.
  3. Jack was given to Archibald Monk in rite of his wife Harriet, who had been gifted Jack's firstborn daughter Chaney in 1827. Jack was valued at $600.
  4. A woman Silvy and child Peter were given to Carr Hargrove. They were valued at $525.
  5. A boy Primus and girl Mary were given to Owen Hargrove. They were valued at $410.
  6. A man Green was given to Jinnet Hargrove. He was valued at $525.
