Hastings Harington was part of the history of the British Honourable East India Company

Biography

Hastings was born in India (probably Calcutta) about 1805. He was the youngest child of John Herbert Harington [1] and his mistress. No baptism record has been found.

Hastings matriculated to Magdalen Hall aged 23 on 2 May 1828, and was awarded a B.A. in 1832 and an M.A. in 1836. [1]

After graduating B.A. from Oxford Hastings was appointed curate at Chalbury where his grandfather Rev John Harington DD had been Rector in 1766 [1]

While at Oxford he married Jane Tucker Lyne on 2 October 1832 at Liskeard, Cornwall. [2] They had three daughters

  1. Robina Sophia (Harington) Lyne - Chalbury 1833 baptised by her father the curate
  2. Charlotte Herbertina Eliza Harington -Chalbury 1836 baptised by her father the curate
  3. Margaret Elizabeth Annie - Preston 1837 baptised at Weymouth by her father

In 1838 Hastings was appointed to a position in the parish of Preston and Sutton Poyntz. He is described as occupier of Chalbury Lodge, Offices, Gardens etc. [3] Jane died in 1839 and was buried at Preston, Dorset [4]

At the census in 1841 Hastings is described as Clerk (a frequent description of the clergy) and tutor living at Sutton with his 3 daughters, a governess, another tutor, 5 pupils and 4 servants [5]

On 25 July 1841 Hastings, in the parish of Preston and Sutton Poyntz, married Eliza Jane Piers, daughter of Octavius Piers Vicar of Preston. The officiating minister was John Harington, Hastings brother who was minister at Little Hinton near Swindon. [4] There were five children from the marriage

  2. Leila Gertrude Harington - Goruckpore, India 1845
  3. Adela Flora (Harington) Cook - Goruckpore, India 1847
  4. Helen Laura (Harington) Bucknell - Chittagong, Bengal, India 1850
  5. Hastings Norman Victor Harington - Hourah, India 1855

In 1843 Hastings was appointed chaplain to the East India Company [6] and was stationed at

Assistant Chaplain Chittagong 1850 [9]
Assistant Chaplain Chittagong 1853, 1854 (Bangladesh) [10] [11]

Chaplain Cuttack 1858 (Odisha) [13]

Hastings died of "disease of the heart" at Cuttack on 13 February 1862 and was buried there on 14 February 1862 [14]
