Biography

André Harkness (sometimes called Andrew) was born about 1796[1] in Lower Canada to William Harkness and Marguerite Leblanc[2].

André married according to the custom of the country Marguerite, a Cree woman.[4] He later married according to the custom of the country Sarah "Sally" Stevenson. André and Sarah were officially married 12 Jul 1838 at Norway House:[2]

Research Notes

  • André's HBC Biographical Sheet makes note of L'Assomption Parish in Lower Canada, but it is not clear if this location references birthplace or residence. No corresponding baptism record, nor marriage record for parents, has been located, at this parish or elsewhere in Lower Canada.
  • Some sources suggest that André's daughter Cecile Harkness aka Pilon is actually his sister, however Cecile's scrip affidavit lists her parents as 'Andrew Arkneys' (Irish) and 'Marguerite' (Indian).
