His sister was Catherine Harkness (1852 - 1864).
William (~38) married Edith Hale (~31) (1865 - 1947) in 1897 in Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States. Their children were:
- Louise Hale (Harkness) Ingalls (1898 - 1978)
- William Hale Harkness (1900 - 1954).
William died on 10 May 1919 aged 60.
