"Stephen Harlan, farmer, carpenter, Friend, b. about the year 1730, in Bradford Twp., Chester Co., Pa; d. there about 8 Mo., 1810; bur. at Bradford Meeting House. He m. 12, 22, 1759, by Episcopal ceremony at St. Paul's Church, Philadelphia, Deborah Strode (widow) b. about 1725, Bradford Twp.; [Deborah] d. there, prior to the death of her husband [Stephen Harlan]; probably bur. at Bradford; [Deborah] a dau. of Richard Woodward and Deborah Stanfield, both b. England. Stephen and Deborah resided, at the time of their marriage, in East Bradford Twp. She was the widow of William Strode.
Issue:
1. Solomon, b. 1760; d. 1827; m. Abigail Clayton
2. Stephen, b. 1762; d. 6, 12, 1795; m. Elizabeth Clark
3. Deborah, b. 1764; d. ___; m. William Windle."
Bradford Monthly Meeting, 5, 16, 1750: "Stephen Harlan complained of for marriage by a priest." Under date of 11, 14, 1760: "His acknowledgement accepted."
In 1798, the farm, now owned by Chester Co. for poor purposes, was purchased by the County Commissioners. It contained 325 acres and the consideration was £3000. The deed was dated Dec. 10, 1798.
An inventory of Stephen Harlan's estate, dated Sept. 10, 1810, and signed by Elisha Hamill and Nathan Walton, places the total value at $2952.03.
