She and George W. Crooks had a son in 1860. They were 1st cousins and did not marry (their parents Jacob Crooks and Catherine Crooks Harlan were half-siblings). The son was named S. M. Harlan in his early years. Nancy Jane and son were living with George's sister in the 1860 census. The son's name later was changed to George Herschel Crooks.
