Biography

Stephen Combs Harlan was born to Jacob Harlan and Sarah Combs in Barren County, Kentucky, USA on October 31, 1801, one of twelve children born to the couple. Stephen is listed as individual #2740 in "HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE HARLAN FAMILY", compiled by Alpheus H. Harlan. According to the history, Stephen Harlan died January 22, 1867. He married first, Mary Bybee ; and later Alvira Harlan ( No. 2735 in the Harlan book)[1]

Stephen's father, Jacob Harlan is identified in the same source as "farmer, millwright, Methodist, b. 12, 25, 1773 (now in) Berkeley Co., W. Va.; em. to Lincoln, (now in) Mercer Co., Ky. around 1782; to Barren, (now in) Monroe Co., Ky.. about 1807, where he m. Sarah Combs Sarah Combs (Methodist), b. 1775, in Loudoun Co., Va."

After more biographical information about Jacob Harlan, the book continues by listing the couple's offspring. Note that the book uses a numbering system to help locate future generations.:

2738. Nancy, m. Ezekiel Springer.
2739. Elizabeth, m. John Greenup. No further record.
2740. Stephen Combs, b. 10, 31, 1801 ; d. 1, 22, 1867; m. Mary Bybee; (2) Alvira Harlan (No. 2735).

An online family tree at http://www.onlinefamilynetwork.org/ lists Stephen Combs Harlan, born 31 Oct 1801 in Barren Co., Kentucky. It states he died on January 22, 1867 and was buried in the Owensville Burying Grounds, Gibson Co., Indiana. His first wife is shown as Mary BYBEE, b. 18 Jun 1808, Barren Co., Kentucky, who died May 2, 1849 in Barren Co., Kentucky, age 40. She and Stephen were married on May 15 1822, in Barren Co., Kentucky.

A second wife is listed as Alvira J. HARLAN, b. 21 Jul 1814, Monroe (Barren) Co., Kentucky; d. 1872, Putnam Co., Indiana (Age 57 years) Married 07 Jan 1851 Monroe (Barren) Co., Kentucky. [2]

Stephen C. Harlan can be found at the age of 47 on the 1850 US census for Barren County, Kentucky with his children. The children don't appear to be listed in birth order, which might indicate some difference in their status. It could indicate that the older boys had a different mother than the younger children, or there may be some other reason for the listing order on the census. A young woman named Mary J. Bybee is also living in the household. Her name is very similar to that of Stephen's deceased wife, but they were born decades apart. It is reasonable to believe that the younger Mary is related to her in some way.

Stephen C. Harlan ("Harlin") can be found on the 1860 US census for Metcalfe County, Kentucky, with his wife, Alvira ("Elvira"), and four children. It is possible (but not yet proven) that the older two were a result of Stephen's marriage to his first wife.
