Biography

Jacob was born in Ohio. He was 17 years old when he was enumerated with his parents in the 1850 Census for Jackson, Madison, Indiana. He was the eldest child listed. His father James Harless was age 34, b. Ohio. His mother Elizabeth Harless was age 36, b. Ohio. His brother Adam Harless was age 14 b Ohio. His brother Samuel Harless was age 12, b Ohio. His sister Minerva Harless was age 10, b. Ohio. His brother John Harless was age 7, b. Ohio. His sister Sarah Harless was age 4, b. Ohio.[1]

Jacob had not moved in ten years when he was enumerated in 1860. In this census his father's birthplace is given as Delaware. James Harless was age 46. His wife Elizabeth was age 49, b. Ohio. Jacob's occupation was laborer; he was age 25 b Ohio.[2]

Jacob Harless married Barbara Franklin, 10 Nov 1868 in Henry County, Indiana[3]

After Jacob married Barbara Franklin, they were living in Jackson Township, Madison, Indiana. In 1870 they had a son Joseph V., age 5. William Kinnanon, age 50, b Tennessee, was also in the household.[4]

When Jacob appears in the 1880 U. S. Census, he was a widower, living in Upper Molalla, Clackamas, Oregon, b. Ohio, age 45. His son Joseph B. Harless was age 16, b. Indiana. His son Branch F. Harless was age 10, b. Indiana. The next family is that of John S. Harless, age 38, b. Ohio. John's wife Nancy M. was age 25, b. Indiana. Benjamin F. Harless was age 12, b. Indiana. This is followed by Luella age 10 b Indiana; Sarah J. age 8 b Indiana; Leander age 6 b Indiana, Charles age 2 b Indiana.[5]

His obituary was printed in the Oregon City Enterprise for Friday, April 23, 1920. FindAGrave profile has him as the son of James Harless and Elizabeth Surface. His wife was Barbary Franklin, 1842-1874. The obituary says that she died before Jacob came West.[6]

There is a different Jacob Harless, wife Barbara Studebaker, b 1834 in Virginia, d. 1927 in Polk County, Nebraska.
