Biography

I spent many days in Logan and Kenawha County archives trying to research Rev. Heavener's claim that David's son Philip "sold his land in 1855 and he with his family, Ballard, and seven daughters moved to Logan County, West Virginia."

Ballard and Mary Jane left Montgomery Co. and after several stops wound up their lives in Walton, W. Va. According to family tradition Ballard and Mary Jane left with his whole family with his father to move west. Perhaps they lived in Logan or Monroe County, W. Va. for awhile before he and Mary Jane settled in Walton, West, Virginia. Apparently they had lived in Jackson County, West Virginia long enough for their daughter Mary Catherine to be born there. And it looks like she was named for two of Ballard's sisters: Mary and Catharine.

I discovered I was working with a cousin when teaching at West End Elementary School in Salem, Va. Cathy Eversold. She invited me to travel to Blacksburg to the Harless Cemetery with she and her father. The Harless Cemetary of Blacksburg, Va. is located in Longshop (Montgomery County) go to Price S. Fork (Texaco) bear Right to 652 and Longshop - first right before Longshop grocery; cemetary 300 yards on left.

Ballard was in the 1880 West Virginia census for Roane County, Walton page 49: Ballard age 54; Mary J. age 52, born Virginia, James, age 18, and George age 10.

Philip 54; wife not listed; Mary age 28; Elizabeth age 26; Ballard age 22; Carharine and Amanda (Arminda twins age 20) Armeda age 19; David G. age 18; Fanny age 17

He was bequeathed "upper meadow" by his father, and sold this property on Tom's Creek to Strother Heavener in 1855 and purportedly he with his family, Ballard, and seven daughters moved to Logan County, West Virginia. The records have not shown this move to be true todate

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Philip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Philip:
