1235 Birth

Richard Harley [2] was born about 1240 in Shropshire, England. [3][4]

However, see below -- he needed to be born in 1235 in order to be 21 in 1256.

Parents

Father: Robert Harley b: Abt 1220 [3] Mother: Alice Pulisdon b: Abt 1240 in Northampton, , Northampton, England [3]

Note: Some date discrepancies need correction here!. If indeed Richard was born in 1235 and was the oldest, place his parents' marriage in 1234. Estimate his mother's age at 18, thus born 1216, and his father's age at 21, thus born in 1213.

1254 Barons and King Edward

In 48 Henry III (1254) the barons, with Simon Montfort, Earl of Leicester, having taken Prince Edward (who was the valiant King Edward the 1st) prisoner, he was held in custody in Hereford Castle, when Roger Mortimer, Lord of Wigmore, contrived his escape, and being assisted by Sir Richard Harley, they issued out of Wigmore Castle and delivered him . Mortimer sent the Prince a swift horse, with intimation that he should obtain leave to ride out for his recreation to a place called Widmersh, and upon sight of a person mounted on a white horse, at the foot of Tillington-Hill, and waving his Bonnet, he should haste towards him with all speed . Accordingly, the Prince, on the signal, setting spurs to that horse, overwent those about him; and Mortimer, meeting him with five hundred armed men, chased them back to the gates of Hereford, and brought the prince to safety to Mortimer's castle of Wigmore. [3]

1255 Assistance to Prince Edward

In 48 Henry III [1255] he assisted Prince Edward, afterwards King, to escape from Hereford Castle, where Simon de Montford and other Barons had confined him. [3]

1256 First mention of Richard, Elder Brother of Malcom

First mention of Richard de Harley, elder brother of Malcolm, is in 40 Henry III (who was crowned 28 Oct 1216, and was king until his death in 1272) abt 1256, in answer to a plea of "Richard, son of Robert de Clifton, that he, with others, came into Wood of the said Richard, son of Robert, in Beldesworth, and that his men, in the said Wood, beat and abused the said Richard, and his men, contrary to the Peace, and thereupon Richard de Harleigh pleaded, that the Wood was his Wood, and finding some trees felled, he carried them away, as he lawfully might. However, by consent, a preambulation was made between the Wood of the said Richard, son of Robert of Clifton, and the Wood of Richard de Harleigh, in Harleigh. And that Odo de Hodonet, Stephen de Buterlegh, Peter de Munston, and William de Leighton, four Knights , reviewed the said Preambulation, begun on the South of the Land of the Priory of Wenlock, between the Wood and the Plain, by an old hedge, to a great Elm, so that the said Richard de Harleight may make a hedge from the Elm through part of that Wood to the Green Oak in the Plain. [5]

In the same year he was among those of the County of Salop , who, holding lands in Capite by Knight's service, to the value of £15 per Annum and not being a Knight, was summoned to take that Degree, or fine for the same. [5]

Note: If Richard de Harleigh was possessed of land in about 1256 , he would have to be at least of age, 21yrs, placing his birth somewhere around 1235.

The following are excerpts about this Richard from A History of Shropshire, volume 3 (London, A. Constable and Co. : 1908). Online courtesy of archive.org (accessed 2 September 2022).

"In 1300 the coroners and communities of the counties were allowed for the first time to elect their own sheriffs.... In 1300 the counties elected Richard of Harley, lord of Kenley and Harley and a grandson of Roger de Puleston, under-sheriff in the 1240s. Harley’s administrative ability had already been recognized in local commissions, and his brother was a royal clerk...."

"In the earlier 14th century the knights most consistently elected for Shropshire were Richard of Harley (8 times 1300-16), Sir Roger Corbet of Caus (15 times 1309-41),... Richard of Harley (d. 1316),[15] sheriff 1300-3."

Footnote 15 ("V.C.H, Salop. viii. 87.") is on page 23. The earlier part of the quote is from page 235.

Richard's father would have been about five years old when Richard was born. I've seen Richard's date of birth listed around 1255, but I've not seen documentation.

The Richard born ca. 1235 has no concrete connection to the couple who married ca. 1255 (see grant from Alice's father). He is not named as either son of Robert (the Robert named is father of the plaintiff, not his) nor is he named as brother of Malcolm. Given the dates of his uncles, his marriage, his active service (when he would be unusually old for it if born so early), it seems most likely the earlier Richard was a contemporary of Robert, not his son.
