Biography

Charles Edward Banks, in his "History of Martha's Vineyard", shows Thomas Harlock, born in 1659 at Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard (at that time, a part of New York under the control of the Dutch) as the son of Thomas Harlock and Bethiah Mayhew. The younger Thomas, a successful yeoman farmer, is shown as having had three marriages: the first is to an unknown wife; the second to Sarah (Marchant) Arey, widow of Richard Arey; and the third to another Sarah, the daughter of Daniel & Mary Stewart.

Assuming Banks's report to be accurate -- it is essentially supported by dates offered in Torrey's "New England Marriages" (only a birth year is shown in one marriage record, and only a death year in another) -- Thomas was born in 1659 and died in 1744.

Quotation from Banks [1] (note that "E." is Edgartown):

"10. Thomas 2 Harlock, (Thomas 1 ), b. 1659; res. E., yeoman. He m. (1) ; (2) Mrs. Sarah (Marchant) (8) Arey, wid. of Richard, 16 Nov. 1696, who was b. abt. 1661 and d. Jan. 1728-9; (3) Sarah Stewart (3), who was b. abt. 1668 and d. bef. 1745. Thomas Harlock was a leading citizen of E. in his time, residing first on Burial Hill and later rem. to the head of Sanchacantacket near Felix Neck. He d. 9 June 1744. His will 27 May 1743 was pro. 9 July 1744."

Research notes: If Banks is correct, then -- unless there was a rare divorce -- there has possibly been confusion over the identity of the Sarah Harlock who died in 1729. If Thomas's second wife, Sarah (Marchant) [Arey], left him a widow prior to his marriage to Sarah Stewart, and if he married the second Sarah prior to 1729, then it is this second Sarah -- not Sarah (Marchant) [Arey] -- who died in that year. The other option, since no original record of the Stewart marriage is in evidence, is that Thomas married third _after_1729. The FindAGrave record (see https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/155318619) -- which claims that it was Sarah (Marchant) [Arey] Harlock who died in 1729 is not helpful -- as there is no gravestone shown and the burial itself is somewhat speculative.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Harlock-26 and Harlock-1 appear to represent the same person because: There are lingering questions (as indicated in the research notes of Harlock-1 -- an orphaned profile I adopted, as Thomas is my ancestor) about Banks's assignment of marriages, but these profiles are clearly of the same person. They should be merged, but research should continue, esp. into the two Sarahs and into which one actually died in 1729.
