Biography

Roy was born in 1897. He was the son of William Harman and Amelia Bell. [1]

He attended Hamilton High School where he was Dux of the school, Head Prefect, Captain of both Football and cricket teams and winner of the senior athletics and shooting cups.

Roy earned a scholarship to Auckland University College in 1917 but in 1918 he volunteered for active service and after 8 months training in New Zealand with the N.Z.E.F he was demobilized. He completed the Bachelor of Science. course in 1919.

He married Florence Pearl Chivers in 1918 [2]

Roy was a science master at Nelson College and at Auckland Grammar School. During this time he gained his Masters in Science with 1st Class honours in Chemistry. He also Represented New Zealand in Hockey during this time.

April 1924 was elected an associate of the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland

Exhibition Scholarship to University College in London where he was awarded th D. Sc. Degree in 1925

1926 employed by The Colonial Sugar Refining Co. (CSR)

1931 was appointed Chief Chemist and Mill Inspecting Chemist

1935 appointed Senior Technical Executive

1940 appointed Senior Executive Officer

1951 appointed General Manager of the Company (CSR)

He was also the Chairman of Directors of Robert Corbett Pty Ltd, Director of Sugar Cartage Limited, Managing Director of Acetone Pty Ltd and a Director of Courtaulds (Aust) Ltd.

President of the NSW Branch of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in 1941 & 1942

He was also closely connected with the formation of the NSW University of Technology and was Vice President of the Council of the body

He left CSR on the 1st of January 1958 [3]

He passed away in 1977 [4]
