James was born in 1842, son of William Harman and Mary Allen. At time of the 1871 census, he was a tenant of 60 some acres on Lot 78, Con.1 of King. The previous year his farm had produced 70 bushels of wheat; 250 bushels of barley; and 500 bushels of oats, plus a goodly amount of peas, potatoes and turnips. He owned one horse and one colt; four milk cows; two horned cattle (oxen?); 13 sheep; and seven swine.
In the early 1900's James and his family moved to Boissevain, Manitoba where they took up farming. James passed away in 1916.
