Biography

Sarah Harman was the wife of John E. Sultzbach. Based on the age and birthplace reported in the 1880 census, she was born in Pennsylvania in about 1837. Her gravestone shows a birthdate of 12 December 1836.^[1] The death certificate of her daughter Sarah Welchans indicates that she was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and the death certificate for her daughter Mary Ann Fletterly gives her birthplace as York County, Pennsylvania.^[2][3] She may be the Sarah Harman, age 13, who was recorded by the 1850 U.S. Census in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the household of Michael and Catharine O. Doub and their four children.^[4]

The 1860 U.S. Census recorded John Sultzbach, age 26, and Sarah Sultzbach, age 23, in the borough of Marietta in East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. John worked as a day laborer. Also in the household was Mary A. Sultzbach (their daughter), age 3.^[5]

The 1880 U.S. Census recorded the family in Marietta, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. John Sultzbach, age 50, was head of a household and a peddler. Sarah Sultzbach, his wife, was 43 years old and "keeping house."^[6] Members of the household identified as the children of John Sultzbach were:^[6]

3. William Sultzbach, 9, son

Four children of John E. Sultzbach and Sarah (Harman) Sultzbach were baptized in St. John's Church (Episcopal) in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 29 September (St. Michael's and All Angels Day) 1881, with Sarah (Harman) Sultzbach and Emma Augusta Sultzbach as witnesses:^[7]

Sarah H. Sultzbach died on 3 June 1902 and is buried in Marietta Cemetery in Marietta, Pennsylvania. The gravestone shows her life dates as "Dec. 12, 1836 - June 3, 1902."^[8]
