Emily was born in 1915. She is the daughter of Wiley Harman and Mary Baird.
Born in Watauga Co., NC, the daughter of Wiley Abner and Marietta Baird Harman. Her mother died in 1917 when Rachel was not yet two years of age. Her father hard-pressed to provide for his four living children, placed the two youngest, Iron Breen and Rachel Emily Harman, in the Oxford North Carolina Orphan Asylum in Oxford, NC sometime before January 1920. Iron Breen Harman died there on Feb. 17, 1920, after contracting influenza, as well as the measles. Rachel would continue to reside at the orphanage until her majority.

Rachel Lyman, 88, a longtime Bethesda resident, church worker and school secretary, died July 17, 2004, of respiratory failure at Riderwood Village in Silver Spring.
Mrs. Lyman moved to Bethesda with her husband, Frank, in December 1941. She was a secretary with the FDIC and in 1948 became parish secretary under the Rev. William Creighton at St. John's Episcopal, Norwood Parish, Chevy Chase.
Her life was distinguished by her passion to help people. She cared for children in her home, taught Sunday School Kindergarten for 25 years and was involved in several church initiatives, such as the Opportunity Shop, Strawberry Festivals, Women of St. John's and the St. Barnabas Mission.
In 1959, Mrs. Lyman became administrative assistant for Principal Roberta Barnes at Lafayette Elementary in Washington, D.C.
In Mrs. Lyman's retirement years, she continued her involvement by caring for others through church and neighborhood activities.
Mrs. Lyman is survived by her husband of 68 years, Frank; a son, Frank Jr. and his wife Sandra of Columbia; two grandchildren, Sarah Lyman Kravits and Frank Lyman III; and three great-grandchildren, Josephine Kravits, Louis Kravits and Aislin Lyman.
