Biography

James was born in 1823 at Horsley, Gloucestershire, the son of John Harman and Elizabeth Cole.

James Harmer [sic] was baptised on 26 February 1826 at Horsley Parish Church aged 2 years. His younger sister Jane was baptised at the same time. Father John was then a clothworker. The baptismal register further recorded James had been born in September 1823. [1]

In the 1841 census the family was living at Nailsworth Hill, Horsley. James, aged 15, was a cloth worker. Note the age of persons over 15 in this census were rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5. [2]
