Biography

Susanna Harman was born 3 March 1796 in Wythe County, Virginia (see research note re: Birth Location) to Johann Adam Harman and Anna Gardner. She was born on her father's property located on Walker's Creek, today located in Bland County, Virginia. She was a twin to her sister Rhoda^[1].

Susanna married Joshua McGuire on 22 August 1824 in Tazewell County, Virginia^[1][2].

On 1 September 1831, Susanna's father signed his last will and testament. Susanna was named within that will as "my daughter Susan McGuire"^[3].

No children have been confirmed for Susanna and Joshua (see research note re: Possible Children).

Neither a death record nor evidence of a burial have yet to be located for Susanna.

Research Notes

Birth Location

Susanna's father spent nearly all of his adult life living on property located on Walker's Creek in what is today known as Bland County, Virginia^[4]. In 1831, when her father signed his will, this location was in Wythe County, Virginia^[3]. Susanna was born in 1796, after Wythe County became effective in 1790, before her father signed his will, and well before the establishment of Bland County in 1861. Based on the location of Bland County, where her father was living, and Susanna's birth year, she was born in Wythe County, Virginia^[5].

Possible Children

On 18 February 2023 two possible children of Joshua and Susanna were identified.

1. This profile had one child associated with it - a daughter named Cynthia Harman. The profile for that child indicates it is the same Cynthia Harman that was named as "my granddaughter Cynthia Harman" in the last will and testament of Susanna's father, Johann Adam Harman. Sources confirming which of Johann Adam's children was the parent to his granddaughter Cynthia have not yet been located. There is no source indicating that Cynthia was a child of Susanna's, born prior to her marriage to Joshua McGuire.
2. The FamilySearch communal family tree indicates that Joshua and Susanna were the parents of a Jesse McGuire (link to FamilySearch profile), based on a West Virginia marriage record for Jesse McGuire and Martha Ann Miller. This marriage record indicates that Jesse was born about 1839 in Tazewell County, Virginia, and that his parents were "Joshua and Susan McGuire"^[6]. If this Susanna was Jesse's mother, she would have been about 43 years old at the time of Jesse's birth.
