Biography

Merle M. Harmon was born to Willard and Effie (Gillespie) Harmon in 1905. His parents divorced in 1906 when he was less than a year old; his mother re-married within two weeks and had another man's baby 5 months later, while his father lied about his age to join the army and was shipped from Michigan to Maine, never to return. Effie told everyone that Willard had died and Merle lived his entire life believing it. Merle himself had several marriages over the years, the last one with a fellow recovering alcoholic he met at an AA meeting. He died in 1985.
