Biography

Brother of Andrew of Ireland and Samuel. Both Andrew and Samuel took US citizenship oath in 1810; He may be the "John Herman" from Ireland that took the oath of citizenship in 1808. Their father not identified.

John and his wife Margaret had a large family (7 children known).

John's grave has not been located. (Not sure if it might be in same cemetery as Andrew and Samuel.)

1792, Nov 11 - Newberry Co., SC. A John Harmon was a grantor to William Wright. Book C page 14.

1800 - Pendleton District, SC. Census page 15. This may be the census record for John: 1 male over 45 years old and one female over 45 years old.

1808 October 30 - Newberry Co., SC. A "John Herman", a native from Ireland, made petition in Newberry Co. to become US citizen. "South Carolina Naturalizations 1783-1850" compiled by Brent H. Holcomb. Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1985, page 210.

1812, Mar 2 - Newberry Co., SC. John Harmon was grantor to Margaret Harmon Book K (or R) page 54.

He wrote a will in Spartanburg District, SC dated September 5, 1830 and named his children and wife. One witness was Andrew Harmon but I don't know relationship but I think they were brothers. Recorded in Will Book B page 13, Box 14 package 6. Recorded on November 1 1830.

Will of John Hermon

In the name of GOD Amen. I John Hermon of the State of South Carolina and District of Spartanburg being in a low State of health but of perfect mind and memory. Thanks be given unto GOD calling unto Mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all Men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and Testament That is to Say principally and first of all I give and recommend My Soul into the heads of Almighty God that gave it And as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. That is to say I give unto my well beloved wife Margaret Hermon whom I constitute make and ordain Executrix of this my last Will and Testament (with my Brother Samuel Hermon whom I desire to be Executor with her) My plantation with all there on and all my Horses Cattle and Hogs together with all debts due me in any wise for her support during her life and I desire them to pay all my just debts and at her Death what ever may be left I desire it to be Equally divided between My son John Hermon my son Samuel Hermon and my Daughters Martha and Jenny. And I do hereby declare that I have given unto my son James Harmon and my Daughter Margaret Kilpatrick and Daughter Elisabeth Lee their portion that I allowed them previous to this day. And I do hereby utterly disallow. revoke and disanul all and every other former Testaments Wills Legacies Bequests and Executors by me in any ways before named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this Fifth Day of September in the year of our Lard one thousand eight hundred and Thirty.
