Charles was born February 17,1935 in Battle Creek Michigan. He is the son of Charles Harnden and Lucille McRae.

January 26, 1998|By DAVID CAZARES Staff Writer Charles W. Harnden, a former director of the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce and an honorary trustee of Broward Community College, died on Jan. 22. He was 62.
Mr. Harnden, president and co-founder of Alpine Engineered Products Inc., a worldwide supplier of building products, died of complications from surgery.
A native of Battle Creek, Mich., Mr. Harnden had lived in Fort Lauderdale for 32 years and was active in business and civic affairs. He was a member of the Senior Advisory Board for Junior Achievement and served on the board of directors of the Florida Forestry Association. Mr. Harnden also was past president of Sales and Marketing Executives of Fort Lauderdale and a past director of Sales and Marketing Executives International. In 1992, he was awarded the James R. Price Automated Builder Achievement in Housing Award. He was also a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed playing tennis and fishing, his family said. ``He had a great sense of humor and was a very positive person, his wife, Mary, said. ``He was full of joy, an eternal optimist. Mr. Harnden enjoyed history and loved visiting aquariums, museums and historical landmarks. A voracious reader, he often finished several books a week. Besides his wife and son, Mr. Harnden is survived by a daughter, Beth Graham, of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Chuck, of Satellite Beach, Fla.; his mother Lucille, of Fort Lauderdale, and seven grandchildren. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Baird-Case-Jordan-Fannin Funeral Home, 4343 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. John the Baptist Church, 4595 Bayview Drive, Fort Lauderdale. Interment will follow at Lauderdale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to Cardinal Gibbons High School, 4601 Bayview Drive, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 33308.
