Harnett, Jonathan, son of Edward, baptized 17: 9m: 1650. [1]
Jonathan Harnett/Harned - baptized: 17 November 1650 at Salem; died: 1714; married: Rebecca Jones. Jonathan appears to have been the only son of Edward II. He was a Cordwainer (shoemaker) by trade, and in 1668 Huntington town records describe Thomas Powell's house lot as lying northwest of Jonathan 'Harnit'. On 17 April 1672 Jonathan Harnett was identified as one of the owners of Lot 6 of the "Ten Farms" at Huntington. When boundary disputes between Huntington and Smithtown were resolved by the courts in 1675, the resulting town line divided the properties of many early families including the Harned's. On 10 November 1682 the spelling of surname to Harned was first used when Jonathan witnessed the deed of a farm from Joseph Bailey to Nicholas Smith. In 1683 his taxable property at Huntington was assessed at 65 Pounds.
There are several references in the public record to "Jonathan Harned's grown-up hollow", which had become a point of reference for property descriptions. On 1 September 1711 Jonathan Harned of Huntington made a deed selling all of his land holdings to various parties, probably indicating his intention to retire. The records of Southold, Long Island show that in December 1711 Jonathan Harned had two lots laid out between the fresh pond and the wading river at Aquebogue, at the east end of Long Island. It is possible that the graves of early members of the Harnett/Harned family were lost when the British destroyed more than 100 headstones during their desecration of the Huntington Burying Hill to build Fort Golgotha during the Revolutionary War.
Arthur Keith's work has provided us with the identity of the most likely progenitor for the Harned family on this continent, however he had no primary record on which to base his connection of Jonathan Harnett/Harned at Huntington, Long Island to the three Harned brothers at Woodbridge, New Jersey. No public or family record establishing the relationship has ever been found. Keith based this connection on the following evidence:
1 * The appearance of the three Harned brothers at Woodbridge approximates the last records of Jonathan on Long Island.
2 * Jonathan and the Woodbridge Harned brothers shared the Quaker Religion.
3 * Jonathan (after 1682) and the three brothers all spelled their surname Harned, rather than Harnet(t).
4 * The brother's given names, Jonathan and Edward, could indicate descendency from Jonathan of Huntington, and his father, Edward.
5 * Woodbridge is a relatively short distance from Huntington.
Unfortunately, although convincing to most reasonable people, such evidence is purely circumstantial.
