THOMAS F. HARNEY SR. (1871-1941) Worcester, Massachusetts
He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts 4 May 1871. His parents, James and Katherine (Hayes) Harney, were from the parish of Carrick-on-Suir, County Waterford, Ireland, and both died in Worcester in 1916. As a youth Thomas was an apprentice to N.J. Tucker and Son, where he learned the plumbing trade. He worked his way up in the company, which became Tucker & Rice. In 1925 he was elected vice-president, and remained there until 1933.
Thomas F. Harney accepted many civic responsibilities in Worcester and served as a member of the common council from the Fifth Ward, holding this office in 1900-01. He was organizer of the first unit of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Worcester and was its first American born president. At one time he was president of four organizations at once: the Worcester Central Labor Union; Massachusetts Builders Council; Massachusetts State Plumbing Association; and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, in Worcester. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was a member of the Roman Catholic church.
Thomas F. Harney married Mary A. Curran and they had eleven children before Mary died on 30 December 1912, in Worcester. In 1919, Thomas F. Harney married Pearl L. (Perkins) Marble, who had a daughter, Gertrude Marble.
