From his obituary: Matthew M Harney was the son of Michael Harney and Ann Graham. He was born in Ireland and came to this country in 1865, gaining employment in a Lynn shoe factory. He saved his money and went into business for himself, in which he was quite successful. He was a Democrat, and was past president of the Irish Benefit Association, a past president of the Lynn branch of the Land League, and in 1883 he was a delegate to the Land League convention at Philadelphia. Mathew M Harney died 24 Mar 1885 from “rheumatism around the heart”, leaving his wife, Catherine (Scanlon) Harney and two children.
