Biography

WILLIAM B HARNEY (1877-1932)

William Bernard Harney was the son of Thomas Harney and Margaret Butler. His obituary was published in the Boston Globe 6 Jan 1932, p.17. William B. Harney, supervising customs agent for the United States customs district comprising Massachusetts, Rhode Island and States northward, died at his home 400 Salem st, early this morning [5 Jan] after a long sickness. He was 57 years of age. Mr Harney, who was undoubtedly the best-known customs officer in New England, and in the words of Collector of the Port S.W. Lufkin, the “best he ever knew” had been in failing health since Thanksgiving time. He had not been at his office in the Boston Customhouse for a fortnight. Mr Harney was born and had passed most of his life in this city. In his younger days he served as an Alderman in the City Government, and from 1902 to 1906 was a member of the Salem City Republican Committee.

William married Lucy Frances O'Brien and they had one daughter:

  • Lucy Harney (1915-2005)
