STRAUTER HARNEY (1901-1989)
Born 15 January 1901 in Nicholas County, Kentucky, the son of Thomas Jefferson Harney and Ida Catherine (Varner).
Strauter attended the College of Agriculture of the University of Kentucky, majoring in animal husbandry and bacteriology, graduating in 1923. He farmed in Bourbon County for about one year, before joining John Kloecker and Dr. Maurice Scherago, traveling throughout the state. Together they worked on a program using Acidolphus Milk for treatment of certain human illnesses.
In 1927, Strauter returned to Bourbon County and began the Bourbon Hatchery at Paris, KY, in 1928. In addition to the hatching plant, he was a dealer in poultry supplies and distributor of charcoal briquettes, used for curing tobacco. He was also sole distributor for Ballard Feeds and Flour.
Strauter Harney married Ellen Wood (Wilson), 27 June 1929. She is the daughter of Reverend E.L. Wilson, a retired Presbyterian minister born in South Carolina. She graduated from University of Kentucky in the class of 1925. Strauter and Ellen are the parents of
Mr. Harney was a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, of Alpha Gamma Rho, the Paris Rotary Club, and it's president for 1940-41, with 55 years perfect attendance; and was active with the Paris Chamber of Commerce.
