This profile is part of the Harney Name Study.

Selby Harney's birth is between 1783 and 1796. Records vary. He was the son of Mills Harney and Nancy Richey. The Gosney family records have his birth as 1783, while the census records have it as 1796. The census records also show he was 4 years younger than his wife (who was born about 1791).

A Selby Harney served in the War of 1812 in the 3rd Regiment (Poage's), Mounted Kentucky Volunteers.[1]

Selby Harney married Sarah Harmon on 28 Nov 1815 at Nicholas County, Kentucky.[2] Sarah is listed in the 1830 census, in Kentucky, with 2 sons 15- 20 and 1 daughter 10-15.[3] Children unknown.

Land records from the Bureau of Land Management, and WI Homestead records, show Selby and Sarah moved to Wisconsin, (one reference says along with his brother, Mills Jr, but this appears not to be the case, as records show Mills Jr died in Indiana circa 1835.

Selby, a farmer, bought 40 acres of land on 1 April 1848 (NESW Sec.36, T 3N R 3E); 26.6 acres on 1 Aug 1849; and another 31 acres on 1 April 1852 (the latter parcels in Sec.1, T 2N R 3E), Lafayette County. From BLM records & census.

The 1850 Census [4] includes Selby and Sarah Harney farming in Centre, Lafayette, Wisconsin. With them is a 7 year old girl named Percilla aka Priscilla George.

In 1860, Selby and Sarah are found living at Salt Creek, Jackson, Indiana[5] and Percilla aka Priscilla George is still living with them.

Selby and Sarah Harney died after the 1860 Census.
