OWEN HARNEY (1817-1885) Owen is the same name as Eugene according to the parish priest at St. Peter's Drum parish.

Owen was born in early October 1817, and was christened 3 Oct 1817, parish of Drum, Athlone, County Roscommon, Ireland. He immigrated to U.S. on ship "Europe", arriving in New York 4 May 1839. Owen lived in New York and the Boston area. On his Naturalization papers he gave his birthday as 15 Oct 1818, however all other information the same.

Owen and his brother, James, were mentioned in an advertisement in the Boston Pilot newspaper on 14 September 1850, under "Information Wanted". The add read: "Of JAMES and OWEN HARNEY, aged 37 and 33 years. When last heard from they were in Boston, Ms. Direct to John Harney, Morrow, Warren County, Ohio." (page 519).

It is thought Owen got in touch with his brother, John, after seeing this notice, for he then moved west, eventually settling in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, where he remained until his death. Research indicates John, James, and Owen Harney were the sons of Hugh Harney and Ellen (Naghten) of St. Peter's, Drum parish, Athlone, County Roscommon, Ireland. (christening records).

Owen married Mary Cawfield/Caulfield, on 10 October 1844, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They had two children,

  • Ellen, b. 21 Dec 1845 in Cambridge; and
  • John Harney, born 9 May 1847 in Boston.

Owen married again 6 June 1852, to Bridget Corcoran, in Iowa County, Wisconsin. On 1 June 1858, he bought 160 acres (SW Sec.24, T 5N R 5E) From Bureau of Land Management (BLM) records. Owen, Bridget, and his children are found on the 1860 Wisconsin census at Mineral Point, Iowa County
