From obituary published on finadagrave: Galena Weekly Gazette, 10 January 1895
Miss Mary Harney, the eldest daughter of Mrs. Thomas Harney, died at the family residence on Bench street at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon. Her death was caused by typhoid fever which disease attacked her about five days ago. It was thought that the crisis was passed and that she was improving, but Friday evening she had a relapse which proved speedily fatal.
The deceased was nineteen years of age, and was possessed of rare graces and virtues which endeared her to her friends and associates. She was a member of the senior class in the Annunciation school. Her early death will cause deep sorrow to her circle of acquaintances, in which she was a general favorite.
The funeral of Miss Harney was held day (sic) at 10 o’clock, proceeding from the family residence on Bench street, to St. Michael’s Catholic church, where services of an imposing and beautiful character were celebrated. The pupils of the Annunciation school attested their love for their deceased companion by forming in procession and marching with the funeral to the church. They followed immediately after the casket as it was borne up the aisle to the chancel. A solemn High Mass of Requiem was sung, Rev. J. E. Shannahan, rector of the church, officiating as celebrant, Rev. J. F. Berube of East Dubuque as deacon, and Rev. Father Nall of Lena as sub-deacon. Father Shannahan delivered a brief discourse ad paid a beautiful tribute to the young and pure life that had vanished. From the church the cortege proceeded to the East Side Catholic cemetery, where interment took place.
