EDWARD P. HARNEY (1869 – d.1946) Illinois
Note: While his obit says he was born 11 Feb 1870, this is the date of birth for his brother and sister, twins, John J and Mary Ellen Harney. Edward was 2 years older than them according to census records. Edward was one year old on 1870 census, and 11 years old on 1880 census.
Edward P Harney was the son of Edmund/Edward Harney (1828-1927) and Johanna (McGrath). Edmund Harney’s family were Irish immigrants from Corderry, County Tipperary who settled in Illinois. Edward P married Hannah Howard, the daughter of James Howard. Edward and Hannah had a daughter,
They are found on the 1920 census living in Kankakee, Momence Co., Illinois. Edward P. died 10 Nov 1946 at age 76y 8ml 29d, and Hannah died 3 Aug 1939 at age 60y 11m 2da. They are buried in the Kankakee Memorial Garden.
Obit: Edward P. Harney, 76, an attorney here for more than 50 years, died at 8:30 o’clock Sunday morning at St. Mary hospital where he had been a patient for only a few days. The remains were taken Monday afternoon from the Canaday Chapel to his late home where they lay in state until the house of the funeral which was held at St. Patrick church at ten o’clock Wednesday morning. The Requiem Mass was celebrated by the Rev. T.U. Demarais, assisted by the Rev. William J. Cleary of East Moline, deacon, and the Rev. M.A. Tracy of Dwight, sub deacon. The Rt. Rev. Msgr Francis A. Clearly of Danville delivered the sermon.
Edward P. Harney was born at Henry on Feb. 11, 1870 (sic). He was married in 1902 to Hannah Howard of Chicago who preceded him in death in 1939. Born of this marriage was one child who survives along with twin grandchildren. He also leaves a sister and several nieces and nephews.
Graduated from the college of law of the University of Michigan in 1892, he began his practice in Momence shortly afterward. He was widely known throughout Illinois, Chicago and Indiana for his brilliant trial work and was an associate of the late Clarence Darrow, famous criminal lawyer, on several cases.
Named a senior counselor of law by the Illinois Bar association several years ago, Mr. Harney was a charter member of the Kankakee Elks lodge and also belonged to the Kankakee County and Illinois State Bar associations. Recently he formed a partnership with Donald D. Zeglis.
