Biography

Alexander was born about 1823 in Overton county, Tennessee. He was the son of Thomas Tyre Harp (1759-1840) of North Carolina and Sara Katherine Dale (1796-1869) of Tennessee. He had twelve siblings, the oldest seven were also born in Tennessee. His family moved to DeWitt county in Illinois about 1828 and his six youngest siblings were born there. His father died when he was about 17.

On 20 October 1847 he was married to Elizabeth Ann Jackson in DeWitt.[1] She was the daughter of Lewis Jackson (1790-1865) and Juda (Judith) Newcomb (1791-1870), both of Virginia. Alexander's sister, Rhoda Ann Harp was married to John Alexander Jackson (1820-1902), also the son of Lewis & Juda. The three Jackson siblings, John Alexander, Martha Jane and Elizabeth Ann, started out in DeWitt, Illinois, and all ended up in Thayer county, Nebraska.

Alexander and Elizabeth had five children; Martha Jane Harding (1849-1916), Sarah (1850-??), Lewis Alex (1850-1929), Daniel (1853-1941) and Nellie (1870-??). The oldest three born in DeWitt township.[2][3] The younger two were born in Iowa according to the 1870 US Census, when they were living in Red Oak township of Montgomery county, Iowa.[4]

His mother died in DeWitt in 1869. He moved his family to Nebraska after 1870 and settled in Thayer county, where his sister, Rhoda Ann Jackson, lived. He is recorded in Spring Creek in 1880[5] and in Hebron in 1885.[6] Elizabeth died about 1882 because she was in the 1880 census, but not in the 1885 census. Her death and burial records have not been found. He married Elizabeth's sister, the widow Martha Jane Jackson Slover, on 27 March 1883 in Nuckolls county, Nebraska and it was Martha who was his wife in the 1885 census.

He died on 2 January 1891 in Hebron and was buried in the Hebron City Cemetery.[7] There is no gravestone, but he is in the cemetery records. His burial memorial has transcriptions of a death notice and a report of funeral and burial in the Hebron Journal, copied below.
