Peter Harper was, in fact, half Shawnee. About 1760, his father and mother, George and Elizabeth Harper, moved from Prince William County, Virginia, to the Potomac River valley frontier. Elizabeth was captured during an Indian raid by the Shawnee. She had at least one child, Peter, and perhaps others, by an Indian father. During 'Pontiac's War', General Henry Bouquet led a successful expedition to the Muskingum River (in present day Ohio), after which the Indians sued for peace and released all their white captives. The Harper family was reunited, and they returned to Prince William County."
