Samuel Hanes Harper was born 22 February 1840 in Rolla, Shelby, Tennessee. He lived there until he enlisted in the Civil War where he was injured and discharged with honor.
He settled in Villa Ridge, Pulaski, Illinois where he married Josephine Green 18 May 1862. They had
