James was born in 1832 in Unst, Shetland.[1] He married Margaret Yule Anderson in 1855.[2]

Seeking gold,[3] James and Margaret immigrated to New Zealand with their eight children in 1875-76 aboard the Caroline.[4] They had two more children in Charleston, Buller, West Coast, New Zealand.[5]

The West Coast New Zealand History website has a photo of the family outside their house at Nine Mile Beach, Charleston in 1879.[3]

James passed away in 1918 in Waipawa, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, just two days after his wife.[6]

Margaret and James are buried in Karori Cemetery in Wellington. Their headstone is recorded on Billiongraves.

Harper-3701 and Harper-8959 do not represent the same person because: I made a mistake in proposing the merges of the two Jameses and the two Margarets. They cannot be the same couple - for one thing, why would the same family have registered one baby at the end of 1881 in Invercargill (Marjory Elizabeth (Harper) Strang (1881-1950)) and another baby at the start of 1882 in Charleston (Anthony Harper (1882-1929))?

There seem to be two James and Margaret Harper couples/families.

The first couple, who I'll call the "Auckland/Invercargill Harpers" (James Harper (abt.1840-) and Margaret Unknown (abt.1855-)) came from as-yet-unknown birthplaces. They had children from 1865 onwards in Auckland and Invercargill.

The second couple, who I'll call the "Shetland/Charleston Harpers" (James Mouat Harper (1832-aft.1918) and Margaret Yule (Anderson) Harper (1836-1918)) moved from Shetland in 1875-6 with their children, and had only two more children in NZ, both in Charleston (Isabella and Anthony).

I will retract the merges for the Jameses and the Margarets.

What does, however, need to be merged, is that both couples currently have an Isabella and an Anthony listed as their children. These two are actually children of the Shetland/Charleston Harpers ONLY. They need to be merged into that family and removed from the Auckland/Invercargill Harper family.

Harper-3701 and Harper-8959 appear to represent the same person because: Harper-3701 currently has little info, but there is enough info on his son Anthony's profile (also a proposed merge) to indicate that these are indeed the same families.
