Biography

Abraham, probable son of John of Nansemond County, Virginia [see his profile], was likely born in the 1690s.

He married in Nansemond around 1720 MARY GUIN/GEWIN (b. est.1700), daughter of Christopher Guin,[1] of Nansemond.

In the mid-1720s they moved south to the North Carolina Colony and settled at Flag Run on the northeast side of the Morratuk (Roanoke) River in Bertie County.

In 1729 Abraham purchased from Joseph Harrell 100 acres on an island between Reedy Branch and Flag Run. The property adjoined the land of William Eason and John Yelverton.[2]

A few years later, in 1733, he purchased from his father-in-law 150 acres nearby .[3]

Abraham's name appears several times in the county records: in 1729 when he and Joseph Harrell witnessed John Harrell's deed for additional land at Flag Run; in 1733 when he and various other settlers, including Francis, Isaac, Joseph, and Edward Harrell, were appointed to lay out a road from Elias Hodges' Ferry to Harrells Hill through Shepards Swamp to Cashy Road; and in 1741 when he and John Harrell were appointed to help Edward Harrell, who was overseer of the Shepards Swamp to Cashy Road.

He died in 1755. His will, signed on May 5, 1755, was probated in the July 1755 court.[4]

  • To wife Mary: a passing mare called Mug, a side saddle and bridle, and the feather bed "whereon she and I usually lyeth on.”
  • To daughter MARY: a bay mare with a white star in her forehead and a white stripe on her nose, aged about 3 years.
  • To son ABEL HARRELL: two Negro boys named Jammey and Gye.
  • To son JOHN HARRELL: my manor plantation and all my land there unto belonging, a Negro boy named Derbey to be delivered after her my wife's decease, lend him the use and occupation of Negro man Gye during his my sons natural life and then the Negro man to return to the next eldest of my sons then living and so from one to the other until the youngest of my sons have him if the Negro above named live so long only observing the use and occupation of the above mentioned Negro Gye unto my well beloved wife Mary during her natural or widowhood before my son John hath any right to claim the above named Negro Gye labour.
  • To daughter "ABBAGILL": a feather bed and furniture there unto belonging.
  • To son LOTT HARRELL: a young bay horse running in "Runerry Marsh." [Runnery Marsh near Flag Run].
  • To daughter GRACE: a bay passing mare now running in "Runerry Marsh."
  • To son ZACHARIAH HARRELL: a Negro wench named Luce and a Negro boy named Seser [Caesor?], a Negro boy named York, four cows and calfs, a young gray mare running in the "Runerry Marsh," and one gun.
  • To daughter SUSANNA: a feather bed and furniture.
  • To son CHRISTOPHER HARRELL: a Negro boy named Robins and £5 cash for his education.
  • All the rest to wife during her natural life or widowhood. Sons Abel and John sole executors.
Witnesses: George House, Edward Toole and Israel Hardy Harrell.

On June 30, 1758 son John, as executor, assigned over to his brothers and sisters six Negroes, cattle, hogs, sheep, some money [amount not given] and household furniture. The document was signed by Abel (X) Harrell, Mary (W) Holland, Zachariah Harrell, Abigail (A) Harrell, Lott (X) Harrell, Theophilus Holland, Grace (X) Holland, Thomas Neal, and Sarah (S) Neal. From the color of the ink, it appears that the names of Susannah and Christopher were added later, possibly in 1768 at the time of the final settlement on Tuesday, September 4, 1768.[5]

Harrell-193 and Harrel-5 appear to represent the same person because: They are same person per the death date and marriage, but he was from Nancemond Co., as Harrel-5 gives, not New Kent as Harrell-193 gives. His birth was not 1713 because he married in Nansemond Co. c.1720.

Harrell-923 and Harrell-193 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be the same person -- dates and locations are very similar, and they are married to the same wife.

Perhaps one is connected to the wrong parents?? Or one is connected to the wrong wife??
