James Hillary Harrell was born in 1847. He was the son of John James Harrell and Lovill Caroline (Fletcher) Harrell.
He enlisted in the Confederate Army in May 1861. (He had to lie about his age to enlist.) He served as a private in Company B, 50th Virginia Regiment. He was captured in Claiborne County, Tennessee, on March 27, 1865, and was sent to Louisville, Kentucky, on May 14,1865. He was released in June 1865 at the end of the Civil War.
He married Violet Ann Larmer DeBusk on October 10, 1866 in Jonesville, Lee, Virginia, United States. In about 1870 they moved to Texas. Together, they had ten children: Lafayette Harrell, William Marin Harrell, Martha Virginia (Harrell) Ellar, James Hillary Harrell Junior, John B. Harrell, Charles Jasper Harrell, Harriet Etta Harrell, Lovey Lou Iza Harrell, Anna Lena Harrell, and Calvin Erwin Harrell.He passed away in 1933.[1]
