  • Obituary: Mrs Charles Blackbee:- We are again regretfully called upon to record the death of one of the early settlers of this portion of Marlborough, in the person of Mrs Charles Blackbee, who passed away, peacefully, at her residence, Havelock, on Saturday morning last, in her 60th year. The deceased, who was a native of Sudbury (Suffolk), England, arrived in New Zealand in 1859, by the ship Zealandia, from London, and, after residing for some four years in the northern portion of Canterbury, came, with her husband (the late Mr Charles Blackbee) to Havelock, at the time of the Wakamarina "rush", in 1864, since which time she has been a resident of the township. The deceased, who was well known and respected for her many acts of non-officious kindness, had not been in the best of health for some time, and on the Monday before her death was compelled to retain her bed from an attack of bronchitis, which, developing into its most acute form, caused her death, on Saturday last. Mrs Blackbee was predeceased by her husband some six years, and leaves six daughters and two sons to mourn the loss of an affectionate parent. The remains of the deceased were laid in the Havelock Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of friends, the Funeral Service being conducted at the graveside by Mr W. Ward, in the absence of the Rev H.W. Howell. Pelorus Guardian, Tuesday October 1 1901

On her headstone it lists her fathers name as Thomas and has her name as Sarah-Ann.
