Biography

William Harrington was born in 1849 at Finchley, Middlesex, England and baptised on 3 Jun 1849 at Holy Trinity, Finchley. He was the son of Thomas Harrington, a Gardener, and Ellen Amos.[1][2]

In the 1851 census, William Harrington was age 1 living at Denmark Street, Lambeth, Surrey with his father Thomas Harrington (28), mother Helena Harrington (33).[3]

In the 1861 census, William Harrington was age 11 living at St Edmunds Terrace, Northampton with his father Thomas Harrington (39), mother Eleanor Harrington (42), sisters Eleanor Harrington (8), Edy Ann Harrington (4).[4]

William probably enlisted in the British army. Details are uncertain because there were multiple William Harringtons in the army during the 1870s.

William Harrington and Mary Ann Roberts (a widow, born Stapleton aka Hart) married in 1879 at Elham district (Folkestone), Kent.[5] Mary had a daughter Annie Florence Roberts (b. 1876) from her first marriage to Zacharias Roberts (1850-1877). William and Mary had three children together: William Ernest Harrington (b. 1880), Ellen Isabella Harrington (b. 1885), Edy Elizabeth Harrington (b. 1888).

William is not found in the 1881 census, and might have been away on military service. His wife Mary, step daughter Florence and son William were living at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Shorncliffe Army Camp, Cheriton, Kent.

William's wife Mary Harrington died in 1888.

William Harrington and Martha Sargent (a widow, born Bird) married on 5 April 1890 at All Saints, Newington, Surrey.[6] Martha had two children from her first marriage: Thomas Richard Sargent (b. 1874), Ethel Eugenie Sargent (b. 1878). They did not have any children together.

In the 1891 census, William Harrington was age 41 living at Suffield Road, Newington, London with his wife Martha Harrington (39), children Thos Richd Harrington [Martha's son Thomas Sargent] (16), Ethel E Harrington [Martha's daughter Ethel Sargent] (13), Amelia Flor Harrington [Mary's daughter Annie Florence Roberts] (14), Will Ern Harrington (10), Edy E Harrington (2). Occupation: Export Packer.[7]

William Harrington died in 1898 age 49 at West Ham, Essex.[8]

After William died his wife Martha lived at West Ham for a few more years and then emigrated to Ontario, Canada with their children.
