Biography

William Thomas Harris was born on March 22, 1893 in Patrick County, Virginia to Ewel James W. Harris and Lucinda Gelbert.

The 1900 Census shows William living on his father's farm in the Smith River District of Patrick County, Virginia.. His race was listed as white on the census report. [1]

In 1910 William is living on his father's farm in Patrick, Virginia. The census report listed his race as white. He was working as a farm laborer on the family farm. He could read but could not write.[2]

William married Bertha Cleo Cochran in approximately 1917 Patrick County, Virginia. He was 24 and she was 15 years old. [citation needed]

WWI Draft registration[3] At the time he registered for the draft he was farming and had a wife and one child. [4]

In 1920 William and Bertha were living in the Smith River district of Patrick County, Virginia. His race was listed as white on the census report. He was renting his home. He could not read or write. His profession was listed as Farm Laborer and he was working for wages.[5]

In 1930 William was living in Smith River, Virginia with his wife and growing family. His race was listed as white on the census report. This census report states that he could both read and write. He owned his own farm according to the census. His profession was listed as Laborer in a lumber mill. They were living next door to his father Ewell James Harris and his brother, James Moir Harris.[6]

William registered for the draft in WWII but there is no record that he served.[7]

In 1940 the family moved to Henry County, Virginia. His profession was listed as Farm Laborer. [8]

William Thomas worked at a sawmill.[9]

Died on 21 August 1970 in Petersburg, Dinwiddie, Virginia, USA.[10]

He is buried in the Harris Family Cemetery.[11]
