Military Service

Veteran of the Revolutionary War: [1] “He served in the Virginia Milita in the American Revolution. He brought 248 acres of land on Glady Creek in Barbour County Virginia in 1796. He and his wife lived out their lives there. He served in the Virginia Continental troops (Revolutionary War) and drew a pension from his country for his services. The grave is marked by a large slab bearing only his name. He built and ministered a church near Meadowville, Barbour County, WVA. He organized at least two other churches Bethel and Mt. Olive.”…. Excerpted[2]

He was a Primitive Baptist preacher. He joined the Revolutionary Army in 1781 at Hardy County, Virginia. He served as a Private under Captain James Cunningham, Virginia Troops, for three months. Friends, relatives and descendants of Pvt. Simeon Harris gathered at the Little Bethel Cemetery on May 20, 1973 to dedicate a Revolutionary War marker which was placed at the grave by James Barbour Chapter, DAR. Highlights of the patriotic ceremony was a memorial tribute to Mr. Harris by Mrs. Glenna Stalnaker, regent, assisted by Mrs. Ena Shaw and the following DAR members: Mrs. Edith Casto, Mrs. Audra Lambert, Mrs. Mary Curry, Mrs. Dessie Row, Mrs. Myrtle Stemple, Mrs. Hazel Wolfe, Mrs. Mary E. Coffman, Miss Susan Moats, and a guest member, Mrs. Mary V. Harris Burner of Gallipolis, Ohio. Mrs. Wolfe, historical chairman, introducted the speaker, Calbert Phillips of Elkins, who gave an interesting and informative talk regarding the life and lineage of Mr. Harris. The service was concluded with "Taps" being played by Eric Derr and Mark Ryan.[3]
