Ira was born in 1837 in Stamford, VT to Hendrick Harris and Sylvia Dickinson. His mother died when he was eight, and he may have been raised by relatives in the adjacent town of Clarksburg, Mass, as he later reported Clarksburg as his place of origin. He is reported in the 1850 census in the home of James M Weld in Stamford. Ira may have been married before 1861. After 1861 he was married to Mary Jane Williams. Ira served in the Civil War, Illinois 44th Infantry, Company H.[1] After the war, he and mary had two children, Eva and Lizzie. Mary's death date is unknown. He married Jane Dewey of Pennsylvania. Their first child was born in Wisconsin, the second in Illinois. They settled in Clay County, Iowa, where their remaining children were born. He passed away in 1928 from chronic endocarditis.
