Biography

Vandergriff T. Harris was born in New Jersey in 1812.

He lived in Wayne township, Clermont County Ohio, where he built a house in a village called Newtonville about 1839. He owned a turning lathe. [1] [NOTE: there is a different Wayne township in adjacent Warren County--easy to confuse]. Around this time, he married Kezziah Clevenger, daughter of Zachariah Clevenger, who owned a farm in the adjacent settlement of Woodville.

Around 1857, he and his family (Keziah and their 8 children) migrated to Spencer County Indiana. By the time of the 1860 census, the family is living in Jackson Township, Spencer County Indiana. Jackson Township lies directly north of Grass township. Apparently by 1880 the family has resettled in Ohio Township, within the settlement of Knob City (based in 1879 map).

An 1879 map of Ohio Township, Spencer Indiana (published by D. J. Lake & Co) shows land owners in and around Knob City. Within Knob City itself, we find V.T. Harris (Vandegriff Harris). A large tract of 140 acres owned by William Stateler lies directly north and west of Knob City center. Directly north of the William Stateler farm is the 61-acre homestead of M. Ice (Melvin Ice, oldest son of George W. Ice). Directly west of the Ice farm is the farm of Jacob Stateler (160 acres). Note also that Knob City lies near the northern edge of the border between Ohio Township and Grass Township to the north. The same 1879 map set shows farms located on the southern edge of Grass township, including William Davis, Martha Martin. Also nearby are numerous Hackleman and Johnson family members.

He had 10 children with his wife Keziah. Of these, 4 of them [Catherine, Sarah, William, and Wilson] married children of George W. Ice, who owned the neighboring farm, as follows: Harvey Ice married Emma Catherine "Kate" Harris. Harvey Ice later married her sister, Sarah-Ann "Annie" Stateler-Harris. Emma Ice married William S. Harris Amanda Ice married Wilson Harris

His birth date is the same as his “brother” William Harris—, who married Margaret and died in 1860. Something is not right about the origins of Vandergriff; he is not listed in New Jersey records, yet all of his “siblings” are. It seems unlikely that a guy named William would adopt the name Vandergriff. Unsolved mystery.

From the census, we know he was born in New Jersey, but I have not located a primary source for his birth and parents. The New Jersey births of children of Henry Harris and Hannah appear to be well sourced--but Vandegriff is not among them... Was he William Vandegriff?

His middle initial is T in the profile, but it is G in the 1850 and 1860 censuses and J in the 1880 census.
