In 1900, Emily Abney was living with her daughter, and son-in-law, David Watts, (indexed as Basil Watts) in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. Her name was indexed as Camile.[1] Fifteen-year-old Katie Abney also lived with the family. She was reported as David Watts's niece.
When the 1910 census was taken, Emily Abney, 59, widow, was a boarder with the Smith family in Omaha, Nebraska. She reported that she was the mother on nine, but only one of her children was living. The young woman listed next to her may have been her granddaughter, "Mrs. Mertle Barris," age 18. [2] Myrtle Watts, age 7, was the daughter of David Watts and was enumerated with his family on the 1900 census.
Emily died 21 September 1916 and was buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, lot 725, with her husband and children. Either the graves were not marked or the stones have disappeared.
Her life was filled with tragedy. Nearly all her children died in infancy or childhood. One son, Willy, almost reached adulthood but was killed in a tragic accident. Her daughter, Amanda, lived long enough to marry but she apparently died before her mother. Katie, who married Swindler Brown, may have been the only one of her children who survived her.
