Charles was born in 1835. He was the son of Robert Harris and Betsey Brewster. He went to sea early in life. In 1862 he entered the navy during the Civil War as Master on the bark Pursuit and was engaged in the blockading of Indian River Inlet for 18 months; was transferred to the monitor Mahopac where he served as executive officer. After the war he returned to the sea sailing all over the world. He passed away in 1896.
